 ENews - September 2013

The August and early September fishing has been rather dour, the lack of flow through the lakes and high water temperatures not proving conducive for successful fishing. Very few members thought a visit worthwhile and only a handful of fish have been caught.

Thankfully temperatures are now starting to fall, some stocking has been carried out and fish are starting to be taken, with one or two members managing their four fish limit, although others have struggled at times. The fish taken have all been beautiful, in excellent condition, many well in excess of 2lb and a real compliment to our supplier at Duncton Mill.

Further stock will be added shortly to provide sport up to the end of our season which ends on the 31st October at Cinder Hill, that at Piplye continuing for a further month, finishing at the end of November.

Scarecrows and a hawk kite on a pole have now been installed at Piplye to try and deter the cormorants, which we fully expect to show up in numbers towards the back end of the season, although angler presence does help to keep them away.

We held a work party on Wednesday 25th September, to remove more of the fallen willow trees in McArthurs. We have purchased a 4 ton winch/cable puller and much to the writer’s surprise, were able to drag the remaining root balls close to the bank in shallow water where they should be out of the way and remove all the remaining branches which up to then had been hidden underwater. The area should now be reasonably clear to fish but there may still be a few broken off branches still present below the surface. Further work will be required in due course to remove all the other willows along the same bank, but the trees are all smaller and shouldn’t pose any problem.

The highlight of the morning occurred when one member, who shall remain nameless, managed to capsize the boat and fall into the water. Fortunately, apart from a thorough soaking, he was O.K. and like the true soldier he is, emptied his wellies, wrung out his clothing and carried on regardless!
